If you have been researching studying abroad, you may have often heard of the term CGPA and wondered how to convert CGPA into percentage. CGPA stands for Cumulative Grade Point Average, a grading system that determines your eligibility for entry into universities abroad. However, if you are a CBSE or ICSE student, you may be familiar with the term CGPA. Converting CGPA into a percentage is a key step for many global educational institutions, scholarship panels and other evaluators; that’s why, if you are planning to go abroad for your higher education, you should understand how the grading system works.

To convert your CGPA into percentage, you have to multiply your CGPA by 9.5. The resulting answer is your percentage score, which is used by colleges, scholarship committees, visa panels and even employers to gauge your candidature. In this blog, we explore the concept of CGPA in detail and how it matters in your college application process.

What is CGPA?

CGPA is a grading system used by educational institutions to evaluate students’ academic performance. The full form of CGPA is Cumulative Grade Point Average.

As the name suggests, CGPA measures a student’s overall academic performance by considering the average of grade points scored over multiple semesters or years.

In India, the CGPA is typically calculated on a 10-point scale; however, some countries may also use a 4-point system. It’s mainly used for university education, scholarships and employment qualifications.

Why is CGPA Calculated?

CGPA is used to gauge a student’s overall performance, encompassing multiple semesters and subjects. In other words, it summarises your entire academic performance into a single score, which is easy to understand. CGPA helps educational institutions make the evaluation process of students easier.

A student’s CGPA also helps scholarship committees make express decisions about candidates and set standards. Students can also use their CGPA score to track their academic growth and set goals for the future.

What is the Difference Between CGPA and GPA?

As is evident from the name, the difference between CGPA and GPA is the term “cumulative.” CGPA considers your grades across multiple semesters and exams. In other words, it is a cumulative score. In contrast, GPA (Grade Point Average) considers your grades in a single semester or term. CGPA is calculated on a 10-point scale, whereas GPA is measured on a 4-point scale.

How to Calculate CGPA into Percentage

Converting CGPA into percentage is an important step for most universities abroad, as well as scholarship panels and application evaluators, while admitting students. Here are the reasons why:

  • A single percentage score offers a complete picture of the student’s overall academic performance.
  • Scholarship and visa panels find it easy to evaluate a student’s eligibility based on a single percentage score.
  • Converting your CGPA helps you standardise your academic records according to the preference of international institutions.
  • Educational institutions may use your percentage score to compare you to other candidates.
  • Employers may have percentage cut-offs for candidates based on their academic performance. Your score helps you meet the requirements set by these institutions.

How to Calculate CGPA Step by Step

To calculate your CGPA, follow this step-by-step process:

  • Convert your grades for each subject to grade points.
Grade Grade Point
A+ 10
A 9
B+ 8
B 7
C 6
D 5
F 0

  • Multiply your grade points by the number of credits per subject. For example, if your score is B (8) and your number of credits is 4, the total is 8 × 4 = 32.
Subject Credits Grade Grade Point Credit Points
Math 4 A 9 4×9 = 36
Physics 3 B+ 8 3×8 = 24
Chemistry 3 A+ 10 3×10 = 30
English 2 B 7 2×7 = 14

Total Credits = 4+3+3+2 = 12

Total Credit Points = 36+24+30+14 = 104

SGPA = 104/12 = 8.67

  • Now repeat this step for every semester.
Semester SGPA
1st 8.0
2nd 8.5
3rd 7.9
4th 8.6

  • Add all your SGPA.

8.0+8.5+7.9+8.6=33.0

  • Divide by the number of semesters.

    33/4 = 8.25

  • Your CGPA is 8.25.
